Macross Gerwalk

Between the games Fury and Avatar: The Last Airbender I have done so fantasy art at work that I started to long for doing some sci-fi stuff. Then Macross popped into my mind. I watched so much Macross as a kid. When a mecha that could transform to a space fighter jet chose to stay in half-mecha, half-fighter jet mode my mind was blown. That was probably the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life at that point.

Now many years later that is still a vivid memory for me. Its one of those iconic silhuettes that is stored in the design bank. I have since then learned that the this mode is called Gerwalk. It gave the mecha more defensive abilities when it was landing or lifting off in combat areas. The mechanical designer Shoji Kawamori is the originator of the Gerwalk. His work have been and still is instrumental to the Macross IP. Appearently he got the inspiration for Gerwalk while on a ski trip.

This is a tribute to Shoji Kawamori and his Gerwalk!

Avatar: The Last Airbender - game

In the middle of 2006 I joined THQ Studio Australia here in Brisbane. The first game I worked on there was Avatar: The Last Airbender. I had the role as a UI artist. The game was released on PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, Wii and PC. Legendary Japanese company Tose made the PSP version and Halfbrick Studios made the GBA version.

It was a really fun project. I learned a lot. Something I really enjoyed was how solid
THQ Studio Australia's proprietary game engine was for making games for multiple platforms at once.
